Edged Out

Punk Rock, Hardcore Punk

"Edged Out" is a song written by Austin Scholl and recorded under his alias ThornBrain. It was released on his second album, Nobody Cares Unless You're Pretty or Dying.

The song is inspired by Minor Threat both musically and in subject. Minor Threat frontman Ian Mackeye has a personal aversion to illicit sex, and this was carried over to the Straight Edge movement that he inspired; the song mocks this aspect of Straight Edge, because unlike drugs and alcohol, sex is a natural human act and impulse. It compares this banning of sex to some of the dogmatic rules in religion which have no purpose other than to control people.

Have you ever had a human impulse
Cut it out, you don't oppress yourself enough
They say to go straight in an old world sense
Tough it out, the better man always says no

But it's not that simple
Your badge of pride
The reason you're alive
You'd better hide
Don't touch that girl
Don't fuck that guy
Or you might
Get just
A little
Edged out

It's part of life to want to do things to people
That if your mom can hear, you'll never say
There's nothing special about not doing something
When no one wants to fuck you anyway

Repress yourself
Your human instincts
Your love and lust
Means nothing to your ego
But the best part
It's not even a dogma thing
Can feel
Just a little
A little
A little
